The pool
Skylights in a pitched white timber roof throw squares of sunlight onto the water at Santa Marina, and stone walls and wood-framed windows run around the pool hall. The pool itself is large, indoors, heated and open all year, with a view out and loungers set against the stone.
A separate hot tub sits alongside, and the spa continues with a steam room, a sauna and a fitness centre, plus massages for back, neck, head, hands, feet or full body. Towels are provided and swimming is free. It works as well in December, after a day on the Parnassos slopes, as it does in August. Children of any age are welcome, though whoever checks in must be 18 or over.

The stay
Santa Marina is a five-star boutique resort in the Kalanaki area of Arachova, close to the slopes of Mount Parnassos, with views over the mountains and towards Delphi. The suites are dressed in rich fabrics and each has a traditional fireplace.
Breakfast is a complimentary buffet. The restaurant serves traditional fondue and health food, and both it and the bars look out over the Arachova landscape. Parking is free and private, with a garage, and Athens is about two hours away. Day trips to Delphi and other mountain villages are easy from here.
Not for everyone: pets aren't allowed, the minimum check-in age is 18, and the hotel doesn't take cash, so bring a card.
