Two outdoor pools sit in the palm garden between the resort and the sea near Arguineguín: a large free-form freshwater pool and, right beside it, a smaller saltwater pool that's heated and open all year. A shallow end makes easing in simple, and children get their own pool area.
Loungers, parasols and pool towels are provided, the pool bar serves drinks on the deck, and the lawn above the water has more loungers under the palms, facing the Atlantic. Here's the thing: heating is confirmed for the saltwater pool, so on a January morning that's the one to head for. Families and couples share the garden, and the spa adds a hot tub, a sauna and a Turkish bath when the breeze picks up.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Radisson Blu Resort Gran Canaria stands on the south-west coast near Arguineguín, about 50 m from the Aquamarina and Patalavaca beaches and less than 3 km from Puerto Rico. Gran Canaria airport is around a 30-minute drive. The rooms and suites are air-conditioned and modern, with large balconies and ocean views, and the suites add a kitchen with an induction hob and a Nespresso machine.
Dinner at La Canaria is a buffet with a different theme each night, from Spanish and Italian to Tex-Mex and an outdoor barbecue, and the rooftop restaurant looks out over the ocean. There's a poolside bar, an outdoor lobby bar, a gym, tennis courts and a kids' club, and parking on site is free.
Worth knowing: children of any age are welcome, but whoever checks in must be 18 or over.

Palm Oasis is built around water. Two outdoor pools wind through a tropical garden of palms and volcanic rock, with waterfalls, hot tubs tucked into the rocks and a slide for the kids. The pools are heated in winter, the main one is open all year with a shallow end for easing in, and there's a separate children's pool.
Below the bare brown mountains of the Mogán valley, the resort wraps around its pool garden: two outdoor pools, each with a hot tub, and a separate children's pool. The main pool is saltwater, heated and open all year, with a shallow end for easing in.
The pool at El Palmital curves across a green lawn, with a shallow, beach-style edge that slopes gently into the water under tall palms. It's heated and open all year, which is exactly what you want from a Gran Canaria winter, and the low white bungalows with their red-tiled roofs sit close around it. A sunken seating area is set into the grass beside the water.
