The pool
Why this pool made the list
Water runs right through Lopesan Baobab's tropical garden. Nine pools wind past palms, rock grottoes and wooden footbridges, two of them for children, and the biggest, Río & Mungo, covers more than 2,000 m². The kids' pool has a water slide and a shallow end, and the heated pool stays open all year, which counts in a Gran Canaria winter.
Two pool bars keep the drinks close, with loungers and umbrellas along the water and the thatched main building reflected in it at dusk. Here's the thing: only one pool is confirmed as heated, so in the cooler months ask which one is warm. With a kids' club and babysitting, this is a pool garden made for families.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Lopesan Baobab Resort is in Meloneras, on the south coast of Gran Canaria, 600 metres from Maspalomas Beach. The Maspalomas lighthouse and the seafront path are about a 10-minute walk away, with the dunes just beyond.
The whole resort is dressed in African style, from the thatched main building to the carved wood in the restaurants. Rooms are spacious, each with air conditioning and a balcony. For dinner there's Akara for African cuisine, La Brasa del Pili Pili for grilled meat and seafood, and a buffet.
It's a big place, with 677 rooms, evening entertainment and a nightclub: expect a lively resort rather than a quiet hideaway. Parking costs extra, pets aren't allowed, and there's a golf course within 3 km.

Questions people ask
Are the pools heated?
One pool is heated and open all year; the others aren't confirmed as heated, so ask which one is warm in winter.
Is it good for children?
Yes: children of any age are welcome, with two children's pools, a water slide, a kids' club and babysitting.
How far is the beach?
Maspalomas Beach is 600 metres away, and the lighthouse is about a 10-minute walk.
The main pool is a big freshwater lagoon that curves through a garden of tall palms, heated through the cooler months. Alongside it sit two smaller adults-only pools in the spa: a 30°C saltwater pool with underwater massage jets and a brine pool kept at 30 to 33°C all year, with a hot tub corner. Children get their own pair: a shallow baby pool and a kids' pool with a slide, both heated.
Palm Oasis is built around water. Two outdoor pools wind through a tropical garden of palms and volcanic rock, with waterfalls, hot tubs tucked into the rocks and a slide for the kids. The pools are heated in winter, the main one is open all year with a shallow end for easing in, and there's a separate children's pool.
Two outdoor pools sit in the palm garden between the resort and the sea near Arguineguín: a large free-form freshwater pool and, right beside it, a smaller saltwater pool that's heated and open all year. A shallow end makes easing in simple, and children get their own pool area.
