Why this pool made the list

Agii Theodori island fills the horizon from the main pool, which runs between the resort's terraces and the sea at Platanias. Outdoor pools spread through the 30,000 m² grounds, including a palm-lined courtyard pool, and there are four children's pools. The heated one is indoors: a 90 m² pool under a glass roof in the spa, lined with white loungers, with a sauna, steam bath and hammam alongside.

Sunbeds and umbrellas are free at the pools, towels are provided, and the pool bar keeps drinks coming through the day. Children of any age are welcome at the outdoor pools. Worth knowing: the indoor spa pool is adults only and access can cost extra, so it's your quiet escape rather than a rainy-day option for the kids.

Beyond the pool

Porto Platanias is right on the sandy beach at Platanias, about 10 km west of Chania, with Chania airport 20 km away. Agii Theodori island sits just offshore, and you'll see it from the roof garden bar and many of the balconies, which face the sea, the pools or the garden.

The resort has three restaurants and five bars, including the Eros & Helios main restaurant and the Mironi à la carte. Rooms range from twin rooms and studios with kitchenettes to maisonettes and suites, and a few suite categories come with their own private pool. Children get a club for ages 5 to 12, two playgrounds and babysitting on request, and there's a gym, with tennis and padel at the sister resort.

Here's the thing: the water slides belong to the sister Porto Platanias Village Resort 100 m away and cost extra, and beach sunbeds are paid locally.
