The pool

Why this pool made the list

Two outdoor pools curl through the gardens between the hotel and the beach, with the sea beyond the loungers. The White Sand Lagoon Spiral is 1.4 m deep, and the Tropical Green Lake, 1.55 m deep, is designed to be accessible for guests with reduced mobility. Both run with the hotel season, from 15 April to 9 November. Inside the Coral Wellness spa there's a heated indoor pool, 1.2 m deep, beside a hot tub.

Loungers line both outdoor pools, and the Nautica Beach & Pool Bar serves food from early lunch until late afternoon. For water of your own, the Junior Suites come with a heated private pool and the Superior Rooms with a heated plunge pool, both facing the pool gardens. Here's the thing: the outdoor pools aren't heated, so in April or early November the indoor pool is your warmest swim.

The stay

Beyond the pool

Nautilux sits right on the beach on the east side of Rethymno, with direct access to the sand and its own beach club of sunbeds and umbrellas. The old town is 2.6 km away and the Archaeological Museum about 3.5 km. Chania airport is around 70 km by road, Heraklion about 80 km.

The 118 rooms and suites run from Standard rooms up to maisonettes and a Master Suite, and the sea-view Executive and Deluxe Suites each have a hot tub of their own. Ulivo is the main restaurant, Petra serves à la carte, and the Spiral Bar rounds things off. The 450 m² spa adds a sauna and a steam bath at an extra charge, plus a fitness centre.

Worth knowing: the hotel is open from 15 April to 9 November, and children are welcome from the age of 12.

Lyttos Beach

Water is everywhere at Lyttos Beach.
