The pool
Why this pool made the list
Built into the volcanic cliff at Agaete, the hotel steps down in white terraces to two outdoor pools. The long one runs in front of the room blocks with the Atlantic just past the glass railing; the second, curved pool comes with its own round hot tub. There's a heated pool open all year, so a winter swim is on the cards.
Loungers, umbrellas and Bali beds line the water, pool towels are provided and the pool bar sits right beside it. Everyone here is 16 or over, so the deck stays calm. The spa adds a water circuit with jets, booked and paid separately. Bear in mind that Agaete is on the north-west coast, where winter days can be cloudier and cooler than in the southern resorts, which is exactly when a heated pool earns its keep.

The stay
Beyond the pool
You'll find Occidental Roca Negra on the cliffs of El Turman in Agaete, on Gran Canaria's north-west coast, with views towards Teide on Tenerife and the Tamadaba Natural Park. Agaete's natural rock pools are about 200 m away and connected to the hotel, and the beaches of La Caleta and Punta Gorda are 150 m off. Puerto de las Nieves is 1.8 km away and the airport 55 km.
All 140 rooms have a terrace or balcony. Breakfast and dinner are buffets at El Juncal, while Rocktop Agaete, the open-air restaurant on the top floor, looks over the sea and Puerto de las Nieves and serves lunch from Friday to Sunday. There's a gym, bike hire and paid parking on site.
Worth knowing: the spa's thermal circuit costs extra unless you book the Double Sea View and Spa Access room, which includes one circuit per person per day.

The pool at El Palmital curves across a green lawn, with a shallow, beach-style edge that slopes gently into the water under tall palms. It's heated and open all year, which is exactly what you want from a Gran Canaria winter, and the low white bungalows with their red-tiled roofs sit close around it. A sunken seating area is set into the grass beside the water.
The main pool is a proper 25-metre one: 25 by 17 metres, heated to 28°C and open from 07:00 to 20:00, with a roped swimming lane along one side and a sloping, wheelchair-accessible entry. Palms and low white bungalows frame it on every side. A second, 14-metre pool sits in the outdoor Zen Spa, kept at 35°C, with jets and waterfalls.
From November to mid-April, the three outdoor pools at Sunprime Atlantic View are heated to around 25°C, and they stay open all year. Together they add up to more than 700 m² of water, at 222, 239 and 289 m², set in a palm garden below the white suite blocks. Some pools have wide walk-in steps, and the Prime Pool Suites open straight onto the water.
