The pool
Why this pool made the list
A swirl of blue tiles spirals across the floor of Teiserhof's outdoor pool, which curves in front of the hotel's wooden balconies and window boxes of red flowers, with mountain views over the garden wall. It's heated to 27-29°C, free and open to all ages, with a pool bar close by and a pool cover.
On the terrace, loungers, umbrellas and towels are set out, and there's a hanging wicker seat in the shade if you'd rather read than swim. The spa adds a sauna, a steam room, a hammam, a foot bath and a relaxation area. Children of any age can stay, so it works well for families. It's a seasonal pool, open from mid-May to mid-October, so it won't be part of a winter stay.

Arched windows and white columns line Kastel's indoor pool, with a painted mural running the length of one wall. The water is kept at about 30°C, there's a water jet and a whirlpool at the edge, and the pool is open all year. Children get two adventure pools of their own, with pool toys and a water slide.
Gran Tubla's heated pool runs from inside to out. The indoor half sits under a ceiling of hanging wooden slats, with loungers along a wall of glass, then the water carries on past a glass partition to an outdoor section on a timber deck, finished with an infinity edge. From there the view opens over Ortisei to the Sella group and Sassolungo. It's open all year, from 09:00 to 20:00.
Up on the roof of La Cort's spa, the infinity pool's glass edge drops away to the meadows and villages of Val Gardena, with the valley town below and peaks lined up beyond. It's outdoors, heated and open all year, so the view swaps green summer slopes for snow while the swim stays the same.
