The pool
Why this pool made the list
Each villa has its own outdoor pool, set into a lawn edged with flowering shrubs and a paved terrace. There's a shallow end for easing in, an outdoor shower beside the water, and the pool is open all year. Climb the outside stairs to the roof terrace and you look out towards the islands of Lobos and Fuerteventura.
Loungers and pool towels are part of the set-up, and the pergola-shaded terrace with its barbecue and dining table sits right by the water, so lunch and a swim are a few steps apart. Nobody else shares it: the pool is yours for the whole stay. Here's the thing: the water isn't heated as standard. Heating can be requested at an extra charge when you book, which is worth doing for a winter stay.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Villas Susaeta is a small group of villas on the southern edge of Playa Blanca, in Lanzarote's quiet Callao Negro area, close to the Papagayo beaches and facing the islands of Lobos and Fuerteventura. Playa Blanca's shops, supermarkets and restaurants are around a kilometre away.
Each villa covers 86 m² on one level: two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a lounge and dining room with satellite TV, and a kitchen with an oven, dishwasher and washing machine. Double doors open from the lounge and one of the bedrooms straight onto the pool terrace, and there's free private parking at the villa.
Worth knowing: this is fully self-catering, so plan a supermarket run on arrival. Pets aren't allowed, and payment is by card only.

Questions people ask
Is the pool at Villas Susaeta heated?
Not as standard. Pool heating can be requested at an extra charge when you book, so ask for it if you're travelling in winter.
Is the pool private?
Yes, each villa has its own outdoor pool, open all year, with sun loungers on the terrace around it.
Is Villas Susaeta good for children?
Children of any age are welcome, the pool has a shallow end, and cots are free on request.
The villa's private pool runs along a pale deck beside the white pergola, with a wall of dark lava stone closing off the garden behind it and the volcanic hills around Yaiza rising beyond. It's a saltwater pool, heated and open all year, and it has its own cover.
The beach is right there: Lava Beach sits on the promenade above Matagorda's dark volcanic sand, and its two freshwater pools curve between palms and white loungers just back from the sea. Both are heated all year, usually to around 26°C, and there's a shallow kids' pool beside them. Water massage loungers line part of the edge.
Up on the hill above Puerto del Carmen, the pool terrace looks out past palms to the Atlantic. The main outdoor pool is open all year and heated in winter, and a small dynamic pool beside it adds a little waterfall and hydromassage jets, heated through the cooler months too. Some suites go further, with a private pool just off the terrace.
