The pool
Why this pool made the list
From the infinity pool at Seaside you look out over the Cretan Sea, with the resort stepping down a rocky headland above Mononaftis Bay. Three outdoor pool areas spread across the terraces, a rooftop pool among them, all ringed by palms, timber cabanas and thatched parasols. The Action pool by the Pelagos bar was renovated with saltwater.
Each pool area has its own bar, open 10:30 to 18:00, and sunbeds, umbrellas and towels come with your stay. The Casa Swim Up rooms open straight onto a shared pool, and several suites have a private one. Here's the thing: the outdoor pools run with the summer season and aren't confirmed as heated, so for a warm swim there's the heated indoor pool with hydrotherapy jets in the Sea Cave Spa, at an extra charge and by appointment.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Seaside sits on a headland at Agia Pelagia, on Crete's north coast, about 27 km west of Heraklion and 29 km from the airport. Mononaftis Beach is 80 m away, down a short stairway, and parking on site is free.
Rooms have furnished terraces or balconies with land or sea views, and the upgrades add shared or private pools. Food is a big part of the stay: the main Veranda restaurant has show cooking and a sea-view terrace, joined by a Cretan taverna, UMI for Nikkei, Oceano and Caléa, a tasting menu by chef Gerardo Metta. For every three nights you get one free meal at an à la carte restaurant, Caléa excepted. There's a yoga and pilates shala, a fitness centre, and tennis and padel courts.
Worth knowing: the resort is built down the slope and some upper floors are reached by stairs only.

Questions people ask
Are the pools heated?
The indoor pool in the Sea Cave Spa is heated, at an extra charge and by appointment. The outdoor pools aren't confirmed as heated and follow the summer season.
Can children stay?
Seaside is for adults: guests must be 16 or older.
Which rooms have their own pool?
The Casa Swim Up rooms open onto a shared pool, and the Suites On The Rocks, the sea-view suite with private pool, the Loft Suite and the two-bedroom suite each have a private pool.
The infinity pool sits at the tip of a rocky headland, so the view from the water takes in 180 degrees of Mirabello Bay: islets, the mountains of eastern Crete and the open sea. Loungers are set into the shallow water itself, and below it all is the resort's own sandy cove. Three suite types add a pool of their own, and in the Infinity Lagoon Suites that pool opens onto a shared lagoon running along the rooms.
A long outdoor pool runs the length of the sun terrace, finished with an infinity edge and a shallow end for easing in. Pale stone decking and glass balustrades frame it, the garden lawns run alongside, and the upper balconies look straight down onto the water. There's a kids' pool too, so younger swimmers have their own patch.
Acro's main pool is a saltwater infinity pool set into the cliff above Mononaftis Bay, on Crete's north coast. The edge runs out towards the Cretan Sea, with a terrace of flat loungers and a shaded cabana at one end and the resort's stone-and-earth suites stepping down the rock behind it. It's an outdoor, seasonal pool, and there's a second, indoor pool for cooler days.
