Why this pool made the list

Every one of the 28 villas has its own heated pool on a private terrace, and from the water you look across the Costa Adeje golf course to the Atlantic. Several pools run to an infinity edge above the fairways; others sit beside a Balinese-style gazebo or a canopied daybed. They're open all year and included in the stay.

Size depends on the villa: the one-bedroom villas have smaller, plunge-style pools, so pick two or three bedrooms if you want to swim rather than soak. There's also a small shared pool with loungers and drink service by the pool bar, and the Golden Pond spa adds an indoor pool, a Turkish bath and a hot tub. In winter the villa pool is the point: a warm swim with the sea below you in January.

Beyond the pool

Royal Garden Villas sits on the Costa Adeje golf course above the resort: a 5-star complex of 28 Balinese-style villas with one to three bedrooms, sleeping two to six. Each villa is individually decorated with wooden furnishings and has a terrace, a full kitchen with dishwasher and oven, and a bathroom with a hydromassage shower and bath. Parking is free, with EV charging, and there's an airport shuttle.

The Jardín Restaurant serves à la carte food and Spanish dishes among wooden lattices, with a buffet breakfast and a brunch served on a floating tray; the Tucán Tucán Pub does cocktails and light snacks. The Golden Pond spa has a Turkish bath, hot tub and ice fountain, and there's a squash court and a gym. The hotel can arrange green fees, yacht hire and trips to La Gomera.

Here's the thing: nothing is within walking distance except the golf course. Playa del Duque is about 2.5 km away, around 7 minutes by car, and Tenerife South airport about 19 km, so budget for a hire car or taxis. The villas sit beside a road, and some guests mention traffic noise.

An 80-metre river pool winds between the River Villas at Royal River, under palms, and each of those villas opens from its own pool into it. The Pool and Grand Pool Villas have a private pool on the terrace instead, and the Lagoon Villas stand on stilts over a lake with direct access to the lagoon pool.
