The pool
The beach is right there: Lava Beach sits on the promenade above Matagorda's dark volcanic sand, and its two freshwater pools curve between palms and white loungers just back from the sea. Both are heated all year, usually to around 26°C, and there's a shallow kids' pool beside them. Water massage loungers line part of the edge.
The pools are open from 10:00 to 18:00 with a lifeguard on duty, and sunbeds can't be claimed before 10:00, so mornings stay fair. The pool bar serves drinks from 11:00 to 17:30, with snacks over lunch. When the sun drops, the spa's terrace jacuzzi runs at about 32°C. A steady pick for a winter week of sun, sea and a warm swim.

The stay
Hotel Lava Beach is a five-star hotel of 154 rooms on the seafront at Matagorda, in the quieter eastern part of Puerto del Carmen. The beach is straight across the promenade, the town centre is about 2 km away, and Lanzarote airport is around 10 minutes by car. Rooms are bright and white with a balcony or terrace, and the sea-view categories look straight out over the sand.
Breakfast and dinner are buffets at Océana, with Aroma as the à la carte option on four evenings a week. The Lava Lounge bar on the fifth floor opens for sunset drinks, and the Piano Bar has live music at night. Guests use the Lava Spa free of charge: sauna, Turkish bath, ice fountain and jacuzzi, from 10:00 to 19:00.
Worth knowing: children are welcome, but the hotel is set up for a relaxed adult stay and doesn't run kids' activities. Parking, including the underground garage, is free.
