The pool
Why this pool made the list
Palm trees and a Thai-style pavilion frame the main pool at the Botánico, set in large gardens with views of the Atlantic and Mount Teide. It's outdoors, heated to 26°C and open all year, ringed with red parasols and loungers, and it's the pool everyone can use. A kids' pool with a plunge pool sits nearby, and a third outdoor pool is kept for adults, with set opening times.
Inside, the 3,500 m² spa has its own heated pool under a timber roof, along with Turkish baths and a Japanese sauna, and access is free for guests aged 16 and over. Towels, loungers and umbrellas come with the outdoor pools at no charge. Children of any age are welcome at the hotel, so the main pool is where families swim, while the spa stays a grown-up space.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Hotel Botánico & Oriental Spa Garden is a five-star hotel in Puerto de la Cruz, on Tenerife's north coast. Rooms look over the ocean, the mountains or the gardens, and each has air conditioning, satellite TV and a large bathroom.
Four restaurants cover Asian, Spanish and Italian cooking, and the Palmera Real has an outdoor dining area in the gardens, next to a cocktail bar. There's a tennis court and table tennis on site, and the spa adds massages, beauty treatments and aromatherapy.
Worth knowing: this isn't a beach hotel, and Playa Jardín is a 10-minute drive. Some restaurants may close for holidays in April, May, June and July, so check ahead if you travel then. Parking is free and private.
