The pool
Why this pool made the list
From the water you look straight down Vathi's cove. The main pool is an infinity edge filled with heated sea water, set on the hillside just above the resort's private sandy beach, with part of it kept for children. Up the slope, many rooms, suites and villas have a sea-water pool of their own: 165 in all.
Around the main pool, loungers, umbrellas and towels are included, with a pool bar alongside and a beach bar on the sand below. Guests aged 16 and over can also use the two indoor sea-water pools in the KĒPOS spa, including a heated vitality pool with massage jets. Here's the thing: the outdoor pool runs with the season, so check the dates for an early-spring or late-autumn trip.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Daios Cove is built into a hillside on Crete's north-east coast, above its own bay at Vathi. Agios Nikolaos is about 10 minutes away by car and Elounda around 20. Rooms, suites and villas step down the slope towards the water, with marble bathrooms, separate baths and rain showers, and wide views of the cove.
Breakfast is served at Pangea, overlooking the bay, which turns into an international buffet with theme nights in the evening. The Greek taverna sits at the water's edge with local dishes and the day's catch. Beyond the pools there's a 2,500 m² spa, two tennis courts, water sports and a kids' club.
Worth knowing: Heraklion airport is about 75 km away, so plan on a transfer or a hire car.

Questions people ask
Is the main pool heated?
Yes: the infinity pool is filled with heated sea water. It's an outdoor pool that opens for the season rather than all year.
Which rooms have a private pool?
The Deluxe Sea View Room and Deluxe Junior Suite with Individual Pool, the Premium Junior Suite and One Bedroom Suite with Private Pool, and every villa, plus some suites in The Collection.
Can children use the pools?
Yes: children of any age are welcome and part of the main pool is set aside for them. The indoor spa pools are for guests aged 16 and over.
A long outdoor pool runs the length of the sun terrace, finished with an infinity edge and a shallow end for easing in. Pale stone decking and glass balustrades frame it, the garden lawns run alongside, and the upper balconies look straight down onto the water. There's a kids' pool too, so younger swimmers have their own patch.
The infinity pool sits at the tip of a rocky headland, so the view from the water takes in 180 degrees of Mirabello Bay: islets, the mountains of eastern Crete and the open sea. Loungers are set into the shallow water itself, and below it all is the resort's own sandy cove. Three suite types add a pool of their own, and in the Infinity Lagoon Suites that pool opens onto a shared lagoon running along the rooms.
The main pool sits on a stone-paved terrace with the garden's trees around it and the bay and mountains across the water. It has a shallow end for easing in, and a separate children's pool gives younger swimmers a space of their own. Both are outdoors, and the main pool opens in season.
